Computer Training “Reassuringly Pricey?

It was the humourist Linda Smith who said, “I love Waitrose – it’s that little bit more expensive.

It seems that until the recent economic collapse, all of us allegedly were sold the view that “It must be good if it costs that much, or Low prices for cheap goods. Advertisers perpetuated the myth – picture the luscious shots on the M&S ads, with “This is not ordinary food, this is…. On the other hand, the food shops low cost ranges were bought by spendthrifts but most of us didn’t give a second glance.

In IT training, expensive companies (surely they’re superior - if you have the money - why else would these companies be market leaders?) convinced us that colleges exist who’ll teach IT cheaper but be warned, it won’t be as good.

Then the world takes a couple of turns, the economic future is uncertain, and all of a sudden value takes priority! Middle class mummies stop visiting Waitrose, and instead choose Aldi and Lidl. Stockbrokers and their large bonuses are out of favour, and we all look more closely at our spending habits.

Have we been fooled by paying higher prices? Dig a little further into the British Computer training market, and there’s a lot to discover. Just because we need an ever increasing number of skilled networking professionals and programmers, are we really getting a good deal coughing up over five thousand pounds to get qualified, or are we just paying to prop up dinosaurs? It’s a bit rich that many computer training providers are preaching one thing whilst practicing another - supplying students with old fashioned methods. Why do students have to read through books when any IT material can be downloaded and watched on computers? Do we really have to drive to training centres, spending more money for our overnights to do what we could do at home? Round the clock Interactive training should be available for me anywhere – at my convenience, but not at my cost.

With more comprehensive, user friendly training options around now at less than half these prices, perhaps we should wake up to the fact that in terms of electronic learning, value means lower cost for higher quality. A new order is asserting itself in IT training – in marketing terminology, it’s “Simply Value prices, for “Best Ever products. In this knowledge hungry world of today, I’d say that’s a step in the right direction.
