Grand Canyon National Parks
Located in the state of Arizona is the Grand Canyon National Parks. This park is one of the most historic and oldest in the nation. The main feature of this park is of course the spectacular Grand Canyon, a massive gorge through which the Colorado River flows. The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world and is considered nothing less than a natural wonder. The park itself spans around 1900 miles and is located in the counties of Mohave and Coconino.
The majority of tourists to this national park arrive at the South Rim via Arizona Highway 64. From the South Entrance you can drive east and exit the park via the East Entrance. While this is not the only way to get there it is the preferred route of most visitors. The Grand Canyon Village serves as the official headquarters of the park and is located close to the South Entrance. The Village area is also an extremely popular spot for viewing the majestic canyon.
The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is open to visitors all year round, 24/7. The camp sites, lodges and dining establishments in this area are also open all year. Summer is the busiest season for tourism so if you plan to visit then it is recommended you make reservations as far ahead as possible. To get around the South Rim area you can take the free shuttle bus. This is easier than driving yourself around which is why many tourists park their vehicles and take the shuttle everywhere, including the Canyon View Information Plaza. If you do plan to drive from the South Rim to the North Rim, it will take you approximately five hours.
There are all kinds of activities to enjoy in Grand Canyon National Parks. You can go hiking, take guided tours, go rafting down the Colorado River and even visit historic and educational museums. For more information about the park, check out the NPS website. The NPS stands for the National Park Service and is the agency under the Department of the Interior that handles all national park issues. On their site you'll find out more about all the parks including plenty of information about visiting the Grand Canyon park.
